Leaving I

ceramic, metal
55x55x195 cm

Stedelijk Museum

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

In conditions of danger, fear or discomfort, one can spontaneously run away and escape. However, less commonly, leaving can be satisfying, a statement — to move on. As you cross the threshold you take your body with you and become more aware of it: its weight, and how it moves. This work is an invitation to transcend conventional boundaries in the realm of spatial and bodily experiences.

Leaving I
compels the viewer to fit into, to fill-mentally or physically- a tight space that encloses the body. The sculpture is built intentionally incomplete and some parts have been left unglazed. This way, it allows a curious viewer to gaze deep down inside its double wall structure, searching for a leaking spot or a crack to look through; proposing an imaginary exit scenario as a personal experience.
